PBM Installation Guide for Linspire 5.0

This installation guide will recommend step by step how to install Linspire 5.0

Before starting the installation, PBM must already be installed.  It is highly recommended that the latest version of PBM is used.  If you are not certain that you are running the latest version, please visit our webpage at http://www.sadevelopment.com and check the version listed in the support heading.

Step 1:  Boot PBM and select Configure from the PBM Menu.  For first time PBM users, this can be done by either clicking the word Configure, or by pressing Alt+C (All yellow letters in the lower right menu of PBM indicate Alt+Key combinations).

Step 2:  Select Partitions from the Configure Menu.  Again, for first time PBM users, this can be done by clicking the word Partitions once to highlight it and then again to select it, or by using the down key to highlight it and pressing Enter to select it..

Step 3:  Select Create from the Partitions Menu.

Step 4:  If you do not see this prompt, skip to step 5.  This prompt occurs when you have more than one free space on your hard disk.  PBM needs to know which free space you want to use for the installation.  In this case I chose the second free space, but please choose the free space where you want to install the operating system.

Step 5:  Specify the amount of free space you want to use for the installation and select Accept.

Step 6:  Select Create Unformatted Partition.

Step 7:  Fill in the name you want for this OS, set the Type to 82h Linux by pressing space on the Type field and hitting page down and down until you get to 82h Linux, and then select Accept.

Step 8:  Type in yes and select Initialize.

Step 9:  Put your Linspire 5.0 CD in your CD-ROM and make sure your BIOS is configured to boot CD-ROM's, and select Restart.

Step 10:  Your system should reboot and boot the operating system CD, a screen like the one below should appear.  Press ENTER to continue the installation or wait for the installation to continue on its own.

Step 11:  Choose INSTALL when prompted, and then click Next.

Step 12:  Choose ADVANCED INSTALL when prompted for the installation method, and then click Next.

Step 13:  Drag the Disk/Partition column heading to the right so it is larger and you can read the entire column.  In all cases (whether you have other operating systems installed before and/or after the area you plan to install Linspire 5) Primary 2 has been the partition you want to select.  You might want to check the size and make sure it agrees with the size you selected when creating it in PBM to be sure.  The next step is to UNCHECK the Write a new Master Boot Record checkbox, and then finally click Next.

Step 14:  Continue through the other options in setup until you come to the finish dialog.  Click OK.  Do not remove the Linspire CD yet.

Step 15:  This is the screen where you should remove the Linspire CD, press Enter once it is removed.

Step 16:  The system will restart and PBM will boot, you can go ahead and boot the new operating system now.

Step 17:  Operating system installation is complete!
